Coaching Conversationally

This conversation with psychologist Sharon Bent focuses on solution-oriented coaching.  The workshop gives a grounding in conversational coaching, a naturalistic, non-directive and highly respectful approach.  As the phrase ‘solution-oriented’ suggests, this approach is about future actions rather examining problems.  It is based on enabling and evoking motivation (as against providing answers and revving people up).  We discuss the OARS technique (Open questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries).  We also talk about the secondary role of the ‘coach’ who can contribute ideas and insights in a collaborative manner.  But the emphasis is on ‘fanning the embers of change’ or a skilful ‘sweeping’ that smooths the paths of new behaviour.
